  • Surface Pro 3 and SharePoint: The Ideal Combo

Surface Pro 3 and SharePoint: The Ideal Combo

Microsoft Surface Pro 3

What Makes the Surface Pro 3 So Attractive?

All types of users, including SharePoint administrators, can benefit greatly from the device that combines the power of desktop computing with the mobility offered by a tablet. Microsoft’s latest offering in tablets, the Surface Pro 3, has closed the processing power gap between tablets and laptops significantly.

Mobile connectivity is not just an option or desire; it is fast becoming a necessity in the business world. In many instances, SharePoint administrators must travel to diverse locations for business. They would greatly appreciate the flexibility of being able to conduct the same level of business anywhere, from the office to the road.

Frequent flyers will certainly enjoy the Surface Pro 3. Airlines still classify it as a tablet so it does not have to be taken out of your bag for a security check or be placed under your seat during takeoff.

Benefits of Surface Pro 3 for SharePoint

The following are some of the main advantages of the Surface Pro 3 over the Surface Pro 2 device.

  • Larger screen. The Surface Pro 3 has increased the screen size to 12˝, which is great for visibility, great for larger projects, and reduces eye strain.
  • Lighter. Even though the screen has been made bigger, the weight of the device has dropped from 900 to 800 grams (1.75 pounds).
  • Increased capability. Earlier Surface tablets run on Windows RT with 32-bit applications, which presents serious limitations in multi-tasking and leaves users needing a full desktop Windows device for the bulk of their work. The Surface Pro 3 is designed around 64-bit Windows 8.1, making it compatible with a broad range of business applications, including SharePoint administration.
  • Increased processing power. The Surface Pro 3 devices include 4th generation i3, i5 and i7 processors. This gives SharePoint administrators the processing power to easily handle complex tasks like content analysis and migration.
  • New keyboard. The keyboard is bigger on the Surface Pro 3. It can be locked on an angle which provides a huge improvement in terms of ergonomics. Earlier model keyboards can be used only in the flat position.
  • Docking options. The new docking options included with the Surface Pro 3 improve its connectivity and flexibility. It includes four USB ports, speaker and microphone ports. It also has an Ethernet jack, whereas Surface RT users were restricted to using Wi-Fi. All these options bring the device closer to a laptop-style configuration in terms of versatility.

The Surface Pro 3 can be described as a hybrid tablet/laptop. The device has the major advantages of high resolution, up to 8GB of RAM and 4th generation processing power. This makes it highly suitable as a SharePoint administrator’s only PC and tablet.
